Circles of life: Mandalas

I hope you enjoyed the process of coloring the printed mandala designs in class on Wednesday.  We'll take some time on Monday, maybe, to finish those up.  Mandalas are important to a variety of cultures, faiths and schools of thought...

You can create some interesting mandalas at this site.  If you click on the asterisks, there is more information about the different elements.

Leave a brief but thoughtful COMMENT on this post answering one or more of these questions:
  • How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
  • Can you think of other pieces of or types of art that are connected to certain faiths, disciplines or movements?
  • What elements/symbols did you include in your own mandala?
  • What role does art play in your own life?
  • If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be?  Why?

  1. I strongly believe in art as therapy. When I was younger, my family had a coloring book of mandalas that we made copies of and colored. All the mandalas were said to have different meanings and purposes meant to center you and/or invoke certain energies or feelings. So I believe hat the methodical process of simply making art, as well as the art itself, can have a very positive effect on people, especially individuals that may be troubled. It seems to have an effect of calming the mind and relaxing the soul. Which I realize sounds very cliche.

  4. I think art is a great form of therapy because it is a way of allowing the mind to comprehend and create something that cannot be described in words. Even just the act of coloring in a coloring book relaxes the mind and allows it to breathe, in a sense. When I get stressed, I always sketch or color, or go out and take pictures. I love the feeling it gives me of being free of my problems, even if just for a moment.

  5. believe art is an outlet, if you will, for most people it could be writing or painting or drawing but it allows a person to put all their feelings in a piece of art that they cannot say in words.

  7. To me art is my way in life, it's my way to feel like I have a place in this world. It is what I am good at and it is what I live up to. Without art, life would be useless and have no depth.

  8. Art hasn't really played a big role in my life. I've never really been interested in looking at art either. I think it's cool watching people create it. But I don't enjoy art museums. The only thing related to art that has really been sort of prominent in my life is my dad's love of Georgia O'Keeffe. I never understood it. Yes she has beautiful art but I was never as infatuated by it as my dad was. He would drag us to the Georgia O'keeffe museum. Also New Mexico where I believe she painted a lot of things from. I sometimes see art on the internet and think it's really cool but nothing further than that,

  11. I think that art could be used as therapy to help those who aren't able to put their feelings into words. I think that can be hard for someone who has experienced a traumatic event and maybe they stopped talking and art could be the one way that they are able to express themselves.

  13. I strongly believe that art therapy could be helpful to anyone, even those that are not naturally talented. There is something very relaxing about making something out of clay, writing, or pressing a pen onto a paper to create an image. The main thing about art that may help people is that you can put all of your concentration on that one thing that you are creating. So, if you have stressful situations happening around you, you can block them out if you get transfixed enough into what you are working on.

  14. Art plays a fairly big role in life because my dad is an artist. He used to be a professional artist until he became sick. After he suffered from a massive stroke several years ago art became even more important in my families lives because his art is something he can still do and we can still cherish.

  15. I really like art therapy as a way of expression and solving problems. I think this kind of therapy works well because it's a way to actually see what patients or you are thinking, and how you feel about things.

  17. In my own Mandela, I used a lot of symmetry, as I think art pieces that are created inside a circle should be symmetrical. I don't think about art too much, but I suppose I could say I watch a lot of cartoons and I like to draw sometimes. If I could be any kind of artist, I think I would like to become a graphic designer. I think it would be cool because you can alter an image in any way you want. Want flying whales? Done. What's that, you need rainbow animals in your picture? Double Done.

  18. Art plays a big part in my life. Every thing we see has to do with art. Like the shapes the clouds make or what we pick out to wear for the day.

  20. I think it’s important for people to have a creative space where they can take all of their thoughts and feelings and make something from it. Art is such a great type of therapy in my experience because it lets me explore my creativity by giving myself a challenge and trying new things. Sometimes I love the result and sometimes I don't, but its the process of creating art that's the best part; it's relaxing and enjoyable, but at the same time it takes focus.

  23. This type of art could be used as therapy because you sem to get lost in it the more you study it, invoking deep thought, or different feelings.

  24. I think art could be used as a therapy by, providing a way of releasing your inner thoughts. I can’t think of anything at this moment, but I know there are probably many connected to faith, disciplines or movements. I wasn’t here to make a mandala. If you would consider music as an art than that plays a big role, by it calms me when I’m not in a very good mood. I have no clue what artist I would want to be.
